I could apologize for not keeping up with posting as of late, OR, I could give you guys a pattern I came with on the fly for a cute and silly zig zag hat, with a big ole puff ball (and you don't even need a pom pom maker).
What I made came out just a *tad* big, but I'm going to still write out exactly what I did. This pattern came out with 88 dcs, but I think 77 will do, so if you have a smaller head, omit the last increase, and just replace the final increasing round with a round of 1 sc in every stitch.
(In this pattern, you will need two colors, which I will refer to as "Color A" and "Color B", in this particular hat, Color A is where the black is, and B is where the yellow is)
Row 1: With Color A, Make 10 DC in a magic ring (click here on how to do this), sl st in top of ch3 and pull close. Ch3 counts as a DC so a total of 11 DC.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 1 dc in same ch 3 stitch, then 2 DC in each stitch around, sl st in top of ch 3 (22 DC)
Row 3: Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc and 1 dc in same ch 3 st) 1
dc in next st, then 2 dc in next stitch repeating all around, sl st in
top of ch 3 (33 DC)
Row 4: Ch 3 ( ch 3 does not count as a dc and no dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc
in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around , sl st in
top of ch 3 (44 DC)
Row 5: Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc and no dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in
next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top
of ch 3 (55 DC)
Row 6: Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc but 1 dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in
next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top of
ch 3 (66 DC)
Row 7: Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc but 1 dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in
next 5 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top of
ch 3 (77 DC)
Row 8: Ch 3 (ch 3 does not count as a dc but 1 dc in ch 3 st) 1 dc in
next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat all around, sl st in top of
ch 3 (88 DC)
Rows 9 - 11: Ch 3, 1 dc in each stitch around.
Row 12: Attach Color B. 2 dc in first st (1 dc in each of
next 3 ch. Miss next ch. 1 dc in next ch. Miss next ch.
1 dc in each of next 3 ch. 3 dc in next ch) around the entirety of the hat.
Row 13: (3 dc in ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch. Miss next ch. 1 dc in next ch. Miss next ch. 1 dc in each of next 3 ch.) around the entirety of the hat.
Row 14: Attach Color A. Repeat row 13.
Row 15 - 16: Attach Color B. Repeat row 13 (twice).
Row 17: Attach Color A. Repeat Row 13.
Finish off. Tie in ends.
Now, the pom pom:
Basically, we're going to wrap the yarn around all four fingers on one of our hands, then tying it around the middle, and cutting the loops.
Take a strand of both Colors A & B, and tuck them between your fore and middle fingers (this is so you can wrap the yarn around all four of your fingers without it coming undone). make sure your middle and ring fingers are slightly apart (Vulcan style), and wrap the yarn loosely around all four of your fingers. Don't worry about using 'too much yarn'. The more, the puffier, so go nuts, just try to keep your middle and ring fingers from touching.
When you feel confident about how much yarn you've wrapped around your fingers, pull the yarn you're holding around the yarn wrapped around your hands (in the space between your middle and ring finger). You can pull this tightly, as you pull the yarn off your hand.
Now wrap the two strands of yarn around all the other yarn VERY tightly, and tie it up very tightly.
Now you can take some scissors, and cut all the loops! Your pom pom will be kind of asymmetrical, so just use your scissors to trim it up a bit.
(If these instructions were not very clear, you can probably find a more conscise tutorial on YouTube somewhere.)
Attach the pom pom to the center of the hat!
Voila! Quirky Wavey Hat. Enjoy!
